Overview

The spousal lifetime access trust (SLAT) has become a popular estate planning technique for married couples.  This session will review cases for SLATs ranging from basic to more complex estate planning strategies.  In addition, the session will examine various provisions that may be utilized within a SLAT.

Faculty

Marguerite C. Weese, Esq.

Marguerite serves as chief operating officer of Wilmington Trust Emerald Family Office Advisory®, which provides a robust platform of strategic advisory services and solutions for successful executives, entrepreneurs, and their families. The Emerald team guides clients in the creation, implementation, and execution of complex financial, estate, and succession plans. In her role as national director of Family Legacy Strategies for Emerald, Marguerite is responsible for the development and delivery of strategic advice offerings that provide personal wealth planning to high-net-worth individuals and their families through the design and implementation of their estate, business succession, and family legacy plans. She oversees a national team of wealth planners, accountants, and family legacy advisors. Prior to joining Wilmington Trust, Marguerite was an associate in Pricewaterhouse-Coopers’ personal financial services group in their Philadelphia office. She holds a JD and master of laws (LL.M.) in taxation from Villanova University’s Charles Widger School of Law and earned her bachelor’s of science and bachelor’s of arts degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park. Marguerite has been recognized by the American Bankers Association as a member of the 40 Under 40 in Wealth Management, Class of 2021. She has been teaching estate planning at Philadelphia-area law schools and is currently an adjunct professor at Drexel University’s Klein School of Law. Marguerite currently sits on the executive committee of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)’s Greater Philadelphia regional board and co-chairs their Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging committee. She is an active member of the education committee, serving as co-chair for the 2023 Philadelphia Youth Leadership Conference Task Force. She previously served as vice chair of the board of directors for WOMEN’S WAY. Marguerite is the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Probate and Trust Section’s liaison to the Board of Governors. She has previously sat on the Probate Section’s Executive Committee and has co-chaired the section’s tax committee.

Jeffrey C. Wolken, Esq.

Mr. Wolken is the National Director of Delaware Trust Strategies and a Senior Vice President at Wilmington Trust, N.A. in Wilmington, Delaware. He is responsible for developing trust planning strategies for wealthy individuals and families throughout the United States and abroad. Mr. Wolken works closely with his clients’ legal, tax, and investment advisors to construct and implement appropriate trust structures that take advantage of the state of Delaware’s unique trust and tax laws. Prior to joining Wilmington Trust in 2005, he spent seven years in private legal practice as a member of the estates and trusts practice group of the Philadelphia-headquartered law firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker Rhoads, LLP. Mr. Wolken earned his J.D., summa cum laude, and MBA, with honors, from Syracuse University and holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Northwestern University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He is a frequent lecturer on topics involving the use of Delaware trusts for asset protection, state income tax minimization, and investment management for unique trust assets. Mr. Wolken is admitted to the practice of law in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. He is a member of the Estates and Trusts Section of the Delaware State Bar Association, and the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law section of the American Bar Association.
